Activists in Tampa trying to meet with officials from the Department of Justice to demand charges against George Zimmerman were turned away by security and police today. They were met at the door, told to leave, and subsequently locked out (doors were locked during business hours).

What are they so afraid of? And who do these people really serve if they won’t open the door to black and brown youth?

Life Malcolm, a local Tampa activist, spoke to participants of a planned downtown Tampa rally coinciding with this meeting with the DOJ about being denied entry into the DOJ building and makes some great points.

(Sorry the video is so terrible/shaky. I’m not particularly good at this

We really had some wonderful speakers. We took to the streets and stood outside the courthouse demanding justice for Trayvon Martin and his family. There were about 100-150 people in attendance.

Florida: Welfare drug-testing yields 2% positive results | The Tampa Tribune

08/24/11—Since the state began testing welfare applicants for drugs in July, about 2 percent have tested positive, preliminary data shows.
Ninety-six percent proved to be drug free — leaving the state on the hook to reimburse the cost of their tests.
The initiative may save the state a few dollars anyway, bearing out one of Gov. Rick Scott’s arguments for implementing it. But the low test fail-rate undercuts another of his arguments: that people on welfare are more likely to use drugs.
At Scott’s urging, the Legislature implemented the new requirement earlier this year that applicants for temporary cash assistance pass a drug test before collecting any benefits.
The law, which took effect July 1, requires applicants to pay for their own drug tests. Those who test drug-free are reimbursed by the state, and those who fail cannot receive benefits for a year. +

Guess who is coming to Florida?

[Image: A screenshot of a Rollins College event site for an event called “Women Today: An Evening with Gloria Steinem”.]
YES. And I AM GOING.
I am so excited about this.
Everyone in the Orlando area should come to this.
Seriously. October 28th. 7 PM. Rollins College.
Be there or be square. Or be there and be square. I don’t care. Just go if you can. It’s free!
Also the Guerrilla Girls will be there the next night. I am also going to that and I am super excited.
