“Here’s the thing: men that are feminists can renounce the label at any time and it generally will not harm their place in society. That is the advantage of male privilege. Men that take on the label need to understand that privilege and work to limit it when entering into conversations in feminist spaces. There are no cookies and no pats on the head given – and for men to expect it is also to remain content in a privilege afforded to them in every other social space.”
This is probably Megan’s best work so far. In an up-front, matter-of-fact sort of way, she journeys down that road we all too often have been on: when men say they are feminists, but don’t understand what that really means.
This article helped to keep my eyes open about things I come across day to day in my work environment, and as a man I think this kind of article is important and aides greatly in self-reflection.
Definitely recommend this to anyone looking for something of intellect and inspiration on an issue not covered very much: male fauxminism.
Posting for shameless self promotion purposes as well as just to link to a place where I’ve sort of put all of my thoughts about male feminists, fauxminism, and mansplaining in one complete essay/article/post.
And thanks for the kind words! :-)
